1 Maumee Falls

One of the biggest reasons we traded in the sports car for an SUV was so we could get out on the back roads and do more hiking. Today we're trying out our new little SUV. But the road down into Maumee South campground and the Buffalo River access isn't much of a challenge, any car can make it easily. Anyway, a good reason to go hiking. The hike is pretty easy too.

Maumee Falls West

There isn’t very much room at the trailhead/parking area, but we manage to get off the road at least.  We head east on the Buffalo River Trail, the first part of the trail is above the Buffalo, with some great views down to the river, across the river way up near the top is a cabin. After a sweeping turn to the south the trail heads downhill maybe 75 feet and eventually to the top of a bluffline.

Maumee West

We follow this bluffline to Maumee Falls West, if there had been more rain recently, we would have seen a couple smaller waterfalls along here. Anyway, just a little further around the bluff to the east is Maumee Falls East. Both these falls could use more water but are still quite impressive. Maumee Falls East is as far as we go, returning the way we came.

Maumee Falls East

This was a quick easy hike, only 1.8 miles roundtrip and less than 100 feet of elevation gain. But that's exactly what we wanted for our first hike in over a year. Hopefully it's just the first of many great hikes in the coming years.

Maumee East

Maumee Falls: Statistics Chart 1     It isn’t hard to get to, from the intersection of Highway 14/27 in Harriet go about 5.2 miles on Highway 27 west, or from the intersection of Highway 65/27 in Marshall it’s about 5.45 miles on Highway 27 east, this is Morning Star.  At the intersection of Highway 27 and South Maumee Road (CR 52) go 5.0 miles north on S. Maumee Rd. Keep an eye out for the white blazes on trees on both sides of the road and the meager parking area, if you go down the long hill to the campground you went too far.
